I tried to be lazy

I also went out shopping, and inevitably spent some time wandering the craft store again. I bought a book about how to reuse the fabric from kimono to make Western-style clothing. (It's tricky because the panels are all long and narrow.) I have a gorgeous haori that I bought cheap ($8) at the flea market in Kyoto last month that I know I'm never going to wear as-is, so I was thinking about reusing the fabric for something that I will wear.
Beautiful!

Date: 2004-10-17 01:43 pm (UTC)There's one on the 21st and another one on the 25th of every month. I just found out about them in September when I was researching things to do.
I did notice once while surfing the web for "kimono" that used kimonos are sometimes sold in bales.
I spent a while surfing used kimono sites (Japanese ones) last night. Most of them still cost anywhere between $200-$600, but the ones that have holes in them or stains on them are sold much cheaper, for $5-$50.
If you think about it, though...you can make an entire three-piece suit or an evening gown from one kimono. Even if you spent $200-$300 for the kimono, that's how much you'd probably have to spend to buy the suit or whatever anyway if you got it at a store. And they just don't sell those kinds of designs in department stores very often.
