diablo ii

This is a computer game by Blizzard Entertainment that can be played either solo or online (but with a max of 8 players per game). I saw one of my brothers playing it one day, and I was curious, so they let me try it. I was instantly addicted. In fact, I shocked everyone by staying up all night playing. (I'm a morning person, not a stay-up-all-night person.) I got out of the habit of playing when I came to Japan, though, because it just wasn't as fun without sharing with my family. I have since shifted my addiction to Blizzard's current MMORPG (Massively Multi-player Online Role Playing Game), World of Warcraft.

potatoes

I have loved potatoes ever since I was tiny. My family has a tradition that, on your birthday, you get to decide the menu. One year (was it my seventh birthday? eighth?) I wanted an all-potato menu...fries, mashed potatoes, and potato chips. When it was time for graduate school, and I had decided that I wanted to study plant breeding, I had offers from a number of different departments in different universities. Each focused on a different kind of plant: tomatoes, onions, sweet corn, sugar beets...and potatoes. Guess which one I picked? ^_^ So I spent two years at Michigan State University studying potato breeding.

sca

This is the Society for Creative Anachronism, a group of people who enjoy re-enacting things from the Middle Ages. There was a branch of it at the University of Michigan, and it caught my interest, so I decided to attend and see what it was like. I really like dressing up in costumes and learning about calligraphy and various other things that go on at meetings, so it was a lot of fun. I especially enjoyed participating in the acting group, the Bedlam Players.

fangirl (I'm wondering what series this is from, if any)

This is Tomoyo from CardCaptor Sakura. She is an obsessed fan of her cousin Sakura. The picture was originally a button that [livejournal.com profile] wednesday_10_00 and I had designed for wearing at conventions.

icha-icha

These are two female baby dragons from the manga series Corseltel no Ryuujutsushi. Icha-icha is the Japanese word for flirting (or acting otherwise lovey-dovey), so I use this icon when I'm being flirtatious.

saladin

This is the character Saladin Alamoot from the novel series Sanzen Sekai no Karasu o Koroshi ("Kill the Crows of Three Thousand Worlds"). He is a member of an alien race, possibly the last of his kind. His long-lived race has been hunted to extinction by humans because their blood can increase humans' lifespan. Essentially, the author portrays his race of "vampires" as being the victims of evil humanity, turning the tables on the traditional stereotype. This plays into a joke that some friends and I started several years ago when we were watching a show and giving outrageous (and mostly fake) spoilers to those who hadn't seen it; we claimed that a certain character was a space-alien vampire. Ever since that joke started, we always point out when we discover a space-alien vampire in a new series. Saladin fits that description perfectly.
