An exchange student from Michigan will be here for about 10 days. Today was her first day, and to take advantage of her presence, we had a special combo "introduction of exchange student/Michigan/Independence Day" class.

The problem is...the exchange student was too embarrassed to say pretty much anything. She spent practically the entire class staring down at her lap, and when she spoke, I could barely hear her...and I was standing right next to her. ^_^; This includes when she was asked (in English) innocuous things like "What is your favorite food?" or "What do you do in your free time?"

I felt kind of sorry for putting her on the spot, so I did what I could to divert attention from her whenever she seemed too uncomfortable. Honestly, though, it isn't as though we were grilling her with difficult problems or making her give an elaborate self-introduction speech. I hope it was just jet-lag or reaction to the new setting and that she will be more comfortable by tomorrow. Otherwise she'll be in for a seriously unpleasant stay.

For English club, the students heard that they'll only have 20 minutes for their performance. They decided it wouldn't be any fun to squeeze Beauty and the Beast into 20 minutes, so they went to their backup plan of hip-hop dancing. (Personally, I couldn't imagine them memorizing the entire show of B&B before the culture festival at the end of September, and I would have thought they'd want to shorten it, but...<shrug>)

I'm glad you were able to take some of the pressure off the exchange student. Selection committees usually screen out the candidates with crippling shyness, so maybe she'll perk up soon. Question: does she wear the school uniform during her brief stay?

Usually...except sometimes they only get a single applicant...

She wore what looked to be a school uniform, but the color and style of the skirt was different from my school. She's pretty tall, though, so maybe they didn't have one available in her size? Or maybe she's just doing her best to approximate it?

Ten days is short.

But...wow...not even answering quiet questions from another American?

Sheesh! I hope she does okay.
