Midwinter musings

I honestly never expected that the government shutdown would last this long. It's not too bad for me yet, but some of my coworkers are adversely affected. For example, in an attempt to prevent "sick outs" (as reported happening in the TSA), our management is requiring a doctor's note from anyone trying to take a sick day. In the middle of cold and flu season. Seriously. One of my coworkers caught a cold and had to take the week off; she had to drag herself to the doctor twice for notes, just to have them say, "Yes, you have a virus. There's nothing we can do. Go home and sleep."
It's inconvenient that I'm not getting a paycheck right when I've just purchased a car and have new monthly payments to make, but having the car is nice. We took my neighbor with us on a wine tasting trip the first weekend after my parents arrived, and that was a fun excursion. I haven't gotten a license plate yet, which means I can't acquire an employee parking permit for the airport parking lot, so I can't commute to work. However, my dad has been dropping me off in the morning, so that does save me some time.
With my dad's help, I've managed to get most of the winter pruning done in the garden. Spring planting is just around the corner. My ume trees are already in full bloom.
One exciting bit of news is that I heard back from the publisher about the game idea I submitted last fall, and they want to try testing a prototype. I wonder how many people submitted games to them, and how many got through to the testing phase. They say they are going to select about three games to publish, and they estimate they will make the final decision in March. I have my fingers crossed that they like my design.
