My weekend was lovely, mostly sunny and warm, and I did as much work out in the garden as I could manage. I started by planting seeds in pots for all my summer crops, such as tomatoes and basil and squash. After that, I tackled more weeding for the rest of the day. On the second day, I did some more weeding, until I finally had enough ground cleared to spread some compost around. I added a good layer of compost to the grapes, blueberries, orange tree, and pomegranate.

My surviving asparagus is looking much stronger this year. Not quite enough to harvest yet, but maybe by next year the crowns will have stored up enough energy to produce a good crop. My plum tree had a splendid fountain of blossoms, though I don't know whether it's old enough to start producing fruit yet. I do have a good set of early flowers on the raspberries, so that will be nice in a few months, and the same for the mulberry tree. The first spring artichoke is just about ready to harvest. Early indications are that I should get a fair number of gooseberries, which is kind of exciting, since I've never had them before.

While I was making a trip to the hardware store to pick up potting soil, I did have a bit of misfortune. I had taken my wheeled carryon bag to put my purchases into--the bag that had suffered years of use (and abuse) carrying heavy loads of manga all over Japan--and on the way home, one of the wheels finally gave out. I was sorry to see it go, but it had really served me well for a very long time...at least ten years. (Farewell, fair bag, you will be remembered fondly.) I put in an order for a new one today, so it should arrive in plenty of time to be useful during all my traveling this summer.

Poor brave bag! If you were left lugging potting soil at that point, I hope you weren't too far from home? Is your new bag going to be awesome?

I worry a lot about my luggage failing somewhere between take-off and reaching my hotel, since I really don't want my vacations to be about replacing my bags. Old greenie only has one functioning zipper pull left.

That's exactly why I got new luggage before our last trip (well--I had NO zipper pulls left, and I worried more about the suitcase falling apart while the airline was handling it, so all the stuff inside would be lost).

My old blue bag made...*thinks*...nine round trips to and from Japan in the last ten years, not to mention some domestic travel in the states (including a trip to Hawaii). It served me pretty well, I think.

I managed to trundle along on the broken wheel. It was only about 10 minutes.

I got this Samsonite bag (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006QYCGU6/). I'm looking forward to the spinner wheels and the large handle.

Aww, sorry about the loss of your trustworthy bag. (Maybe you should have gotten one of those ones we saw last year at the garden show?)

お疲れ様でした!(To you and your faithful bag.)

Glad you finally had some nice weather for gardening. The snow is ever-so-slowly melting here.
