Game I Backed:
Tokaido Collector's Edition
Status: Funded

This new version of Tokaido includes the Crossroads expansion and some promos as well as metal coins and tons of miniatures to represent the characters, plus other stuff. I keep waffling about keeping my pledge for this, because it's kind of expensive, but there are going to be so many miniatures included that I could keep a set for myself AND give a set to my parents.

Games I Viewed:
Kingdom Builder Big Box
Status: Funded

This project collects Kingdom Builder and a bunch of its expansions together in the same box. I looked at it because the game is designed by the same person who came up with Dominion, but area control as a game mechanism just doesn't do it for me.

Let Them Eat Shrimp

This is a tile laying game by the creator of Biblios. Neither the theme nor the game mechanics appealed to me, but the campaign does offer a pledge level to buy a copy of Biblios for anyone who might be interested in that.

This game attempts to replicate the town-building of people at the dawn of civilization. I absolutely adore the art. Again, though, I'm not into the tile laying.

Aw, man, now I'm tempted by the Tokaido Collectors Edition - not sure if I'm more or less tempted because I already own a copy of the original game (but not the expansion). I've starred it so I can contemplate how much I really want painted minis. And/or until I do my tax return and decide how much richer I'm feeling.

I'm in the same boat with Tokaido. I thought about doing the $45 level, but A) I don't have the expansion, so I'd need to get that, too, and B) I have no use for unpainted minis (painted or bust!). So if I do get it, I have to go all in. I just did my March budget, and I can actually afford it; I just haven't decided if I want to spend that much yet. I might wait until I see what the prototype minis look like. (But I have to remember that I definitely want to get the Pandemic germ meeples that are $65, and there are supposed to be more Kickstarters I'll be interested in this month...March is coming in like a lion on my budget?)

(note to everyone: OH MY GOD, the comments section. Do not waste your life reading them all like I did. It's all "too many minis, what a waste, let's have component upgrades instead!!" and then "OMG, you took away half of our minis, samurai level is worthless now!!" I wish I could look away from this train wreck.)

At least New Dawn has been postponed until April. But I will be doing my taxes pronto so I can get that return.

(It doesn't help that my clothes dryer stopped working over the weekend. I'm probably either going to have to pay someone to fix it or buy a new one.)

I know what you mean. I've been reading them all every day, and I'm about to give up on them. Personally, I'm in the "we don't need 4 copies of every character, that's overkill" camp. But then, I pledged before they offered the duplicate unpainted set, so it wasn't part of my consideration to begin with.

Oh no! Good luck with getting it fixed/getting a new one. Not having a dryer is a bummer.

Yep. A couple people (before all this nonsense about minis started) have suggested the alternate versions be gender swaps, and I LOVE that idea. Otherwise I'm honestly not even excited about having 32, let alone 64.

I need to find an area control game that I like, but since they are inherently competitive, I am unwilling to buy them for myself. So I need Sara and w_10_00 to buy lots, so I can try a variety of them.

Tokaido is on my short-but-growing list of games I won't play, because the entirety of the game seems to be my most-loathed mechanic: you are blocking me from what I want. For me, that just doesn't equal pleasant time spent with friends.

I'm sorry you see it that way, though I know you're not alone in that feeling. Personally, I look at this mechanic not as "I can't get what I want" but rather "How do I make the best of the options available?" It's that kind of decision-making that I find enjoyable.
