Fond Farewell
May. 28th, 2013 07:53 pmIt was gray and damp for a large part of this weekend, so I didn't get much accomplished outdoors. I harvested the last of my spring beets and a cabbage, then planted the last (I hope) of the summer beans. Sadly, my tomato seedlings just cannot get a break; many of them were consumed by snails. I will probably have a few tomatoes this year, but not many. On the bright side, I discovered a third surviving asparagus crown, yay!
On Wednesday, one of the beagles in our canine department will be retiring, so we are having a retirement party for him. His handler will be baking a cake for him, so the rest of us are supplying refreshments for the humans. I got several jars of my strawberries out of the freezer and spent all day today baking a couple dozen strawberry muffins and a strawberry pie to take along to the party. I haven't done a proper pastry crust from scratch in...I don't even know how long. I certainly have never made a strawberry pie before, so we'll see how it turns out.

Date: 2013-05-30 03:07 am (UTC)Ironically, I have a number of happy volunteer tomatoes that sprang up in the front yard where I spread around compost. They must be from the bird-damaged tomatoes that I tossed into the compost bin last summer. I'll have to wait and see which varieties they are. It's so funny that they are doing great while the ones I planted intentionally keep getting mowed down by pests.

Date: 2013-05-29 10:48 pm (UTC)Not this time, because she already has two dogs, but she found a nice family for him.
Will the handler get a new partner?
Yes, she's leaving on Monday for the training center.
