Harvest season has hit, and so far it has been an avalanche.

Last weekend I chopped and froze at least 6 quarts of rhubarb (though it might have been more, since I lost count partway through). My freezer is now stuffed full again. I need to find some way to use all this bounty before I have to squeeze more in.

Oh, wait--it's too late. This weekend I picked two huge mixing bowls full of cherries from my tree, which has produced more than ever before. I usually freeze the cherries, but now I don't think I have space in the freezer for everything. I will probably end up making cherry/rhubarb jam instead.

I also spent most of the day yesterday making 9 cups of jam from tart yellow plums that are growing in my neighbor's yard. (At least...the branches are in their yard. They can't figure out where the actual trunk of the tree is, because it's behind their sprawling apple tree.) The plums were too sour for them to enjoy eating fresh, so they let me have as much as I wanted (mainly so they wouldn't all fall and rot on their lawn). The jam is a lovely golden orange color and has a lemony flavor that I've been enjoying with biscuits and tea.

I picked the first fig today, marking the beginning of what will surely be a deluge. The grapes will not be far behind, as some are already starting to turn purple.

In my spare moments, I finished knitting a plumeria-inspired sundress for my niece.

Nights have been rough all this past week, due to the holiday. My border collie is deathly afraid of fireworks. Though they are illegal here, people have still been setting them off sporadically in the neighborhood since as early as June 30th. The evening of July 4th was a nightmare, with the fireworks starting at 7:30pm just as I was trying to fall asleep and continuing for FIVE HOURS until nearly 1am. I had to spend that whole time dealing with a dog desperately clawing at all of my doors, trying to find a place to hide from the noise. Just when I would start to get him settled, more fireworks would go off and get him riled up again. I finally locked him in the bathroom at 1am and fell asleep on the couch...only to have to get up at 3am to get ready for work.

Oh, such fun times.

People have continued setting off fireworks every night this week, though none as bad as that. They went off twice just last night. Seriously, people, the holiday is OVER. Let the rest of us SLEEP.

I am still hoping to find time to work on my trip report, but I want to type it up on my new computer, which is in my bedroom...the bedroom that my border collie threw into utter disarray in his search for the perfect hiding place. (I mean, really, did he have to climb up on my bathroom vanity and kick things onto the floor, or knock my trash can over? Was that truly necessary?) I'd like to get the place straightened up before I start working in there.

P.S. This is when I miss all the icons I had back on LJ. I could have used my "That's just silly, Rei" icon right about now.
