A strong earthquake hit Niigata today, during which a number of buildings collapsed and landslides have covered roads. I don't know if this will make international news, but it did last time. I thought I should post to reassure everyone that I'm nowhere near the earthquake location.

For reference, here is the map that I posted the last time this happened, showing where Niigata is in relation to where I am. I live far enough away that I didn't even feel it. I just heard about it when I turned on the TV to watch the news.

The news first showed up for me on the BBC newsfeed ('cause, really, American media only cares when there's an international disaster), and I immediately thought "hey, s_vamp used to JET near Niigata!"

*sigh* I want to go to Tokyo.

It made Y!News, but only in the late afternoon. Apparently, the capture of an ancient fish (I can't even remember off the coast of where any more), & I think what were 5 easy ways to liven up a simple meal, featured prominently for most of the day. Now, if they'd dished up the captured coelacanth in a spiffy way it'd have been worth the coverage, else...ehh.

Good to hear you're ok. :)
