Today was a national holiday (Culture Day), so I had the day off. I spent most of my non-reading time cleaning up my two guest rooms. Partly this is because [livejournal.com profile] wednesday_10_00 will be coming to visit in a couple weeks, and partly it's because I couldn't get started making [livejournal.com profile] megory's yukata with all the clutter on the floor. I managed to get the place pretty well straightened up. I even hauled out my winter clothes and put the summer clothes into storage.

I laid out the yukata roll and got the major pieces cut, so they're all ready for me to start working on this weekend. I learned from the last one that it takes me about five whole days to make a yukata [though hopefully this one will go a bit faster because a) it's smaller--less to hem, and b) it's from a roll, so it requires less extensive measuring]. If I work on it every free weekend, I may be able to get it done in time to mail for Christmas...

TWO guest rooms? Wow, I always had a mental picture of you being in a tiny efficiency apartment or something. That must be because of all the talk of space being at such a premium in Japan. Maybe that is just in certain areas?

TWO guest rooms?

Technically, it's only one guest room and one master bedroom. But I sleep on the couch in the living room (the only room with air conditioning/heat), so that frees up the master bedroom for guests.

Wow, I always had a mental picture of you being in a tiny efficiency apartment or something.

My apartment has a kitchen, two bedrooms, and a tiny living room. Rooms are measured by the number of tatami mats that cover the floor. Each mat is about 3' X 6'...the bedrooms are each 6 mats and the living room is 4 1/2 mats.

Pictures from my apartment can be found in some of my early entries, such as 8/9/04 (http://www.livejournal.com/users/spacealien_vamp/2004/08/09/) and 8/12/04 (http://www.livejournal.com/users/spacealien_vamp/2004/08/12/).

That must be because of all the talk of space being at such a premium in Japan. Maybe that is just in certain areas?

That's particularly in large cities, such as Tokyo. I live in what is designated "the country" (which means that there are random rice fields everywhere). Of course, it also depends on how much one pays for rent.

Whooooo! Whooooo!

I'm getting so excited already! You are so far ahead of us. I haven't even begun to think about a Christmas gift list. Hmmmm...I better start checking your Wish List. I just hate the idea of sending you things that you might have to turn around and pay big bucks to send back home in a few weeks. I love the light and versatile gift of money. Do you want anything from France or Spain?

You'll just have to pretend to be surprised. ^_~

I made up a package with the accessories and various other things. I plan to take it to the post office any day now, though I don't know which rate I'll ship it.

I really don't know what there is to ask for...
