The darndest things

spacealien_vampI was buried under an avalanche of papers to grade today, because all of my students simultaneously had writing assignments. As always, it's amazing to see what they come up with.
I just loved the points this student found important to describe:
My mother is good at cooking but she can't eat cheeses.
This student will fit right in at a Michigan high school, I'm sure:
I hear that you love sushi. So I will take you a very nice sushi restaurant. Maguro is so hot! Maguro has 3 types, Akami, chutoro, otoro. Akami is the cheepest of the 3 types. But it is so goooood, and otoro is very expensive. But it is OMG!!! You must be like it. Everybody going crazy.
In one of my senior classes, the textbook unit is about invitations and parties, so I planned a lesson in which the students have a competition. Half the students were designated as "inviters" and half as "refusers." They had to plan out what kinds of arguments or excuses they would say either to invite someone to a party (or other event) or to refuse (as politely as possible) to attend. Then they paired up, and tried to continue inviting/refusing until one side conceded. We then had some of the pairs demonstrate in front of the class.
Pair 1
Inviter: I want you to come to my Christmas party. There will be a lot of food.
Refuser: I'm sorry to tell you, but I can't come. I'm Buddhist.
Inviter: 0_0
Pair 2
Inviter: Please come with me to a concert. It's a band popular in the USA.
Refuser: I'm sorry, I can't.
Inviter: The tickets are only 1000 yen ($10).
Refuser: I wish I could.
Inviter: I'll treat you.
Refuser: Okay.
Pair 3
Inviter: I'd like to invite you to my birthday party. It's on Sunday afternoon. Don't bring any presents. I don't need anything but you.
Refuser: Maybe I will have a headache on Sunday.
Inviter: ;_;
