I've been wondering, what is Golden Week? What does it celebrate?
Golden Week is not, technically, a holiday in and of itself. It's just a name for a period of time in which there coincidentally happens to be five holidays in rapid succession.
April 29th--Green Day May 3rd--Constitution Day May 4th--National Holiday (Random day off because no one would work anyway) May 5th--Children's Day And there's generally a Sunday in there somewhere.
Many people take off the time between Green Day and Constitution Day because, hey, who feels like interrupting a long holiday to go to work? Or, as I believe melf42 once put it, "Yeah, we all know you're calling in sick from Okinawa."
