Winter Wonderland
Dec. 18th, 2011 05:00 pmEven after living here for three years, I'm still amazed at how mild it can be in the winter. Daytime temperatures are expected to hover around 60°F for the next week at least.

megory requested pictures of my winter garden, so here goes. All outdoor pictures were taken early in the morning, before the dew evaporated.
The sugar snap peas are quite happy, and they're just reaching the trellis I made for them out of bamboo and twine. They share a bed with the fenugreek, which isn't growing as fast, but is still doing well enough. The chickpeas have a bed all to themselves; it will become the purple asparagus patch in the spring. Two types of cabbage share half a bed. The more mature plant on the left is Ruby Ball, a red variety, and the smaller plants on the right are January King, which should be ready to harvest by March (assuming the squirrels stop trying to dig it up).
The ume tree is beginning to show pink flower buds. As near as I can figure, it should bloom around February, if it gets enough chilling hours to break dormancy. That will be exciting to see.
The red-rib dandelions and spinach are bright green and growing fine. I harvested a bunch of leaves today and combined them together with the sugar beet greens and some turnip greens from my CSA box to make a pan of saag paneer for lunch. It has a slight bitterness from the dandelion, but not enough to be unpleasant.
I spent most of the weekend doing more weeding in the front yard. I really should make a batch of fruit preserves tonight, but I'll probably end up procrastinating.
