Reason #53 why I hate phones
Feb. 16th, 2006 07:54 amIt was recently pointed out to me that I had let the battery on my cell phone run down...it had been at zero charge for several weeks, as a matter of fact. I rarely ever use it, so I hadn't even noticed.
The day after I charge it up, I'm awakened by a call...at midnight. I answer with "Hello?" as always, since the only people who know my cell phone number speak English. Generally, this proves too daunting for the average Japanese person, so wrong numbers usually hang up instantly. This time, however, a man responded with "Moshi moshi?" (the Japanese telephone greeting). I tried "Hello?" again, hoping that if it were a wrong number, the person would give up.
Instead, the man started repeating, in English, "Telephone six? Telephone six? Telephone six?"
This was too much for my sleep-muddled brain to handle. I figured that, since he was speaking English, he would understand it when I said, "I think you have the wrong number." Well...that didn't work. He returned, in Japanese, "Where are you? In Tokyo?"
What. The. Heck.
I was too tired to deal with this nonsense, so I just apologized and hung up...and TRIED to get back to sleep. Geez. Phones are handy sometimes, but honestly, I really hate them.
Other than that, my week has been crawling. The first year students are off learning to ski (and the exchange student with them, though no one saw fit to tell me this until AFTER I waited around for her to show up to our weekly lesson), so I have even fewer classes than usual. I've finished reading all the books I had of immediate interest and am down to the "if all else fails" pile.
I'm told that we'll get internet at work next school year, after everything is turned over to Ritsumeikan. That's great...but NOW is when I have time to use it. <pout> I'm scrambling to think of things to do at my desk to keep myself busy. I've tried a little painting...I may need to come up with a portable sewing project or something.
