I bought a DVD of Nightmare Before Christmas to play for my students in the Listening class. I made up a bit of a listening worksheet to go along with it...some of the students ignored the worksheet entirely, but I was rather surprised that even some of the students who generally nap through class actually made somewhat of an effort to fill out the answers. They all seemed quite engaged by the movie. ...Maybe it helped that there were Japanese subtitles.

The teacher next to me saw the DVD on my desk and asked if it was a new movie. I said no...and then checked the date on the package. Has it really been 12 years since it came out? Yeesh. Anyway, she had never seen it, so I loaned it to her.

I'll be doing trick-or-treating at my desk until Halloween. This year I'm using bigger portions of candy ("bigger" consisting of one packet of KitKats)...but I'm also adding the stipulation that each student can only come once. So far it's going over well. The students--especially the ones I don't teach regularly but just happen by my desk on the way to see another teacher--are excited to get such a treat.

Yesterday one of my seniors came by to report that she passed an exam to become a banker. I don't have the faintest idea why she wanted to report this to me, but she clearly made a special effort to come to my desk and deliver the news in English. I was rather tickled.

Tomorrow is my last day of classes for the week. Thursday and Friday have a special schedule due to various sports competitions. The English club students, since they have nothing better to do, decided that they will use the time to interview foreigners in Kyoto and ask them various questions about their impressions of Japan. I'm not quite sure yet whether I will be expected to accompany them.
