I will be honest, I peeked at several LJ pages before, and I was not very impressed. Whereas personal home pages express a great deal of individuality and character, it seemed as though LJ pages reduced people to cookie-cutter lookalikes who tried to make up for the pages' lack of creativity by sticking in as many flashy icons as possible. I also found them annoying to navigate. Therefore, to save myself the headache, I avoided reading LJ pages.

However, after being told repeatedly that I should get on LJ because that's where everyone else is, I decided I should at least give it a fair chance before making up my mind completely. If the benefits turn out to be as good as everyone claims, it may be a useful medium for posting updates on my travels.

I will be heading to Moriyama, Japan, this summer as part of the LISD Teacher Exchange program. The contract is for one year, with the possibility to renew for a second year if all goes well. I have previously taught in Japan for two years as an ALT with the JET Program, and I studied for the 2003-04 academic year at the Japan Center for Michigan Universities in order to become certified as a Japanese teacher. I am hoping that I will be able to use this journal to post updates throughout the year describing the things I encounter as part of this exchange program, both for my friends to keep up with what I'm doing and potentially for the LISD to have a current resource about the way the job is going. The problem is, I tend to procrastinate when it comes to updating on a regular basis. ^_^; Maybe with such a public medium I'll be better about it...
